1.
You meet me in the morning In the fresh light I can start with you again When every word was a mystery Like a daydream that I never want to end But I'm suspended in twilight and the dark night is beginning to set in I haven't glimpsed you for ages and I'm calling out to know where you have been You contain it all but you're here with me now You meet me in the morning In the fresh light I can start with you again
2.
Where have you been? Where have you been? I've been calling I've been calling If I cannot trust you to save me from pain how can you be trusted for anything? Are you still in the garden where the trees gave us good food? Will this ache last forever? Will my eyes ever see you? As this dark night lingers and my feet grow weak Will your absence answer? Will your silence speak? Yet your voice comes softly, "Where are you now?" It resounds within me, and you draw me out It was I who was far-off; You were right there beside me Is it too late to turn back? Will you be there to guide me? My word is not in the heavens that you should ascend up Nor beyond the sea that you should swim across My word is here in your heart My word is here in your mouth I've placed your feet on my ground
3.
Why did you break me when I was just becoming who I thought I was meant to be? What are you purposing? Stretch your hand to me Don't you care that I'm perishing? You who made me, do you see? When will you heal me of all this calamity? When will green leaves grace the tree? What good are you growing? I'm holding me breath as I search for the shore I know you're the one who breaks to restore I can't see your face, but I've seen in before And so I'll wait till your word breaks the storm
4.
What year are we in this week? Did the headlines make you weep? More killer cops, more doublespeak How long will you keep your peace? Can't you see, or do you not speak? You've got the same blood that your brother bleeds Don't say all lives matter till you say his name If you don't see the problem, who can make it plain? If you bow to your comfort you'll have to kneel on the slain Woe to the rich, whose comfort will end Woe to the full, who will grow hungry again Woe to those whose hands crush the innocent Don't say all lives matter till you say their names If you don't see the problem, who can make it plain? If you bow to your comfort you'll have to kneel on the slain Cain, where is your brother now? His blood cries out from the ground Is it too late to turn around?

Psalm 138 04:35
Your steadfast love endures forever Your steadfast love endures forever Your steadfast love endures forever and ever I give thanks to you O Lord with my whole heart in all this earth I sing I bow before your throne for rightly lifted up are your word and your name You are faithful to the sound of your voice when I call to you You lifted me from depths of despair For our God is high, yet he regards us Every king will be made low before you, Light of Light And the downcast will be raised I am hidden in the mire I'm hidden in your hand I am suffering, I am safe You are faithful to the works of your hands when we call to you Illuminate our darkness and given your peace in the storm, our breadcrumb trail home Your steadfast love endures forever Your steadfast love endures forever Your steadfast love endures forever and ever

Predawn 06:11
There's a sea of gathered sorrow but it's stuck down in my chest It just won't break through All this history we've lived through rhymes with all that came before Are we ready to lose? I've been waiting for the sun to break through Let my weak heart feel your touch anew In this predawn, till the night is removed You don't have to let it fester, You can come out from the cold There's a place here for you I can hear your invitation in the incremental sky All onyx, pink, blue I've been waiting for the sun to break through Let my weak heart feel your touch anew In this predawn, till the night is removed The one who made the sun waits with you in the darkness In the dim fluorescence The meaning of the night changes with his coming Everything is changing in time
7.
There's nowhere to run from the currents of time I'm drowning I want to hold it all, but I can't hold anything I'm drowning My sorrow still gets the best of me (but I know you hear me)
8.
Your breakers crash, I'm underneath their heavy weight When I come up again, I do not recognize this place Am I lost? My times are caught in the tides of your eternity Our eyes are locked, you're pulling me into your sea Am I lost? Your boundlessness hems me in Where can I go from you presence? My eyes are weak, I can't see Your word is a lamp unto my feet Your steadfast love abounds to me I shall not lack any good thing Though I'm hard-pressed and crushed with grief, you're setting a table before me
9.
Waking up to the light of the sun in the silence, in the stillness Dreams of spring bursting forth, everything reborn All manner of goodness and life flow from you in the sunlight, in the darkest night When we awake we will appear with you Awash with light, my eyes return to you You gave me sight, and let me see anew A place to love, to heal from my wounds A solid space to be known by you It's hard to smile when the night was so cold I remember, hold it in my bones But surely joy follows pain, and you give it all A lovely taste when the bitterness has passed A friend who stays when no other friend would last Flesh of my flesh, a companion on the way A home to rest in at the end of day It's taken some time to remember what I know to be true I was made to love and be loved by you So make your home with me here, make all things new
10.
Within the summer sun you show yourself You are the beauty in all we've beheld Grand oaks in majesty, pines in repose Declaring mysteries you alone know In autumn's deep designs death makes an end Yet holds the promise of new life again I can't hold it all in my heart You've been there from the start

about

Much of life is lived in the dark. Maybe most. We don’t usually know where we are going or even who we are becoming. The things which would seem to be most clear and in our grasp are still beyond our sight. The impact of our words and actions, however careful, measured, or intentional, still return to us unintended fruit. And this is, of course, also true of the words and actions of others.

Much of life is lived in the dark, but then there are those even more intense seasons of night. In the Christian tradition, the Dark Night of the Soul is that season wherein we feel so acutely estranged from God and from ourselves that we can scarcely bear to stay on the path at all, or perhaps even get out of bed.

During one such season, Iconium's Tyler Stitt found it generative of, among other things, art. Songs which became a mode of dialogue—inner dialogue, dialogue with God, dialogue with neighbor. Personal grief mixed with the grief of a quarantined world, a world of violence and stoicism in the face of such violence.

Measurelessness is the ancient depth of the night sky. Measurelessness is all the beauty in the world. All the understanding in the world. All the love in the world. In the beginning was the measurelessness of God. Every fall the deciduous trees of the northern midwest show us that death is sewn into the fabric of all things, but so is new life. Psychology brings us the language of acceptance for the setbacks and traumas of our lives. In the same way, Measurelessness is language for a God who holds everything, all the beauty and all the grief; not even our darkest night can be excluded.
